September (ALREADY?!?!) Goals...

Sweet Gherkin!
Someone mentioned September goals in the forums on etsy.com today and it made me double take. Are we REALLY that close to September?
By jolly we are!

I have met my August goal (It was Junes and Julys goal, too) so I am set to take on September fresh!
As my long time readers know I like putting goals in writing as it keeps me accountable.
You all will hunt me down and beat me with soppy bread if I dont follow through to be thest of my ability.
As far as sales: I would like to get to 60 sales. (as of today that is 14 more) My long term sales goal is 100 sales by my one year anniversary with Etsy, so I feel comfortable on my way there.

I would also like to get to 700 hearts. I am at 601 right now. Hearts arent a huge thing for me but it lets me know fresh eyes are on my shop.

Ah well, August flew by and was wonderful! Welcome September!

Craft Show Mojo - Part 4! (Final Installment)

Hello again! As you all know I have been working on putting together information, tips and tricks for the upcoming craft show season. I hope you all have enjoyed these and found them helpful!
Onward and upward....
To Recap previous posts:
Part 1 - What you should have to prepare for the show, your display, and tips and tricks about getting ready.
Part 2 - How to find a show, research and questions, and if the show is right for you.
Part 3 - What to do when you GET to the show?
Part 4 - Uncomfortable Situations you WILL experience and how to deal.

I have come across most of these situations. Some of the information is things I WISH I had the marbles to say. I hope this helps prepare you for those situations where you are so shocked by the audacity of some people.

- Hagglers. Awkward....to say the least. My personal take on this is it is an art and craft show, not a garage sale. If I don't have a sign up that says "make me an offer" don't make me an offer.
I know this is a personal decision but my prices are firm.
The one time I encountered this I was so shocked I didn't know what to say. I am better prepared, now..... My answer would be "My prices are firm." Simple, to the point and not snarky.
I don't want to turn away a potential customer but I feel my prices are MORE than fair where they stand. You need to be firm and know your limits. If you are okay with haggling, be prepared by knowing your lowest price and if you don't want to haggle, don't be bullied. This is your work, your creativity and your craft, be proud of its value.

- Unwarranted or Rude comments. I think all of us have heard this one -huff- "I can get that at Walmart for $1.50"
Ouch.
Well, did Mr. Walmart specifically make this with his own two hands out of his home/studio where he hand picked the materials and colors and created this design all by his wee little self?
No? Hm.
Really though, my comment is "Oh, that's nice." Honestly that's about all I can muster. I don't want to explain to them why mine are different. I obviously value handmade work and if they don't want to see that I cant change their outlook. If you can buy it at Walmart then why are you here? So... if you can control your shock/temper/disbelief and come up with a clever retort that isn't rude, by all means! "Oh, that's nice." Is about all I can do without letting my head pop off and spin around.
I hear "I can make that!".... I wish I could say "Oh that's great! Are you going to run a booth here next year, then?" Snippy on my part. Be prepared with a clever quip like "But WILL you ever make it? Why not buy it from me and save yourself the time?"
-insert big sales smile here-

-Copiers. I have not personally experienced this one (that I know of) the people that examine the product so hard you know they are figuring out how you made it to go home and make 20 just like it. The only thing I can say I would do in this situation is approach the person and engage them in conversation. Distract. The more attention you give them I think the less likely they will be inclined to stand and memorize. If anyone has tips on this one, id love to hear them!

- Gossips. We touched on this one in previous threads. If you have a customer that comes over saying "Well DinglyBobs over there has this same thing in her booth but yours are better!"
Don't encourage that. Gracefully accept the compliment but don't encourage further remarks. You are all in the show together, your work may be similar, but it takes PEOPLE to make a show, not one person. Rise above the occasion and move on to a safer less catty subject.
If you have people come into your area and they are discussing amongst themselves something distasteful about another artist, let them be. Say Hello or Good Morning, but don't join in... Do your best to be peacekeeper.

-Children. I was saving this one for the last bit as this is a difficult subject to discuss. It all depends on what you sell, if you have an innate tolerance for children of all kinds and how the parents are at Parenting.
My products are geared toward the young and young at heart. Those with a sense of humor. I enjoy watching children discover my products and interact with them. There will be grabbing, there will be playing. I accept that with my product.

However, if my products were not child oriented it would be a whole new ballgame.
Make sure to "baby-proof" your booth. Raise the tables with risers. Make sure your table cloth is secure ON the table (double sided sticky tape) so it cannot be pulled off with everything on top of it. Put up signs "You Break it, You buy it." Make it clear the parents will be held responsible if something is damaged instead of the "Oh Ooops! Look what Timmy did!" as they walk away.

Engage the adult but also acknowledge the child. Let him/her know you are keeping an eye on them. (this would be a good time to have the wingman help with children while you sell to the adult)
If the parent isnt minding their child, engage them. Get on their level and ask them how their day is going. Some will shy away and run back to mom or dads side. Some will be so shocked you are talking to them that they will stop what they are doing and start talking to you. Remember these are little people. There is always a reason for their actions. Are they tired? Hot? Over Stimulated?

Be careful not to overstep the parents unless your craft is in danger of breaking/shattering/becoming a projectile. If the child will hurt themselves or someone else with your product it is absolutely your place to ask them to "Look with their eyes."

I would NEVER touch someone elses child. Unless severe damage is iminent, never lay hands on someone elses child. If they are running pel mel at your display - become the barrier, thats fine! If they are cocking back to launch something across the booth, Yes, grab it from their hands.
I am lucky to have never experienced a true unhappy child in my booth, so if you have more tips and tricks id love to hear them also!

Thanks to everyone for reading these! If there is anything major I forgot that you want info on, please let me know! Hope this helps for your future endeavors! Happy crafting!

Craft Show Mojo - Part 3

To Recap previous posts:
Part 1 - What you should have to prepare for the show, your display, and tips and tricks about getting ready.
Part 2 - How to find a show, research and questions, and if the show is right for you.
Part 3 - What to do when you GET to the show?

Yay you have found a show, asked all of the questions for information on the show. You have your spiffy new display set up and laid out, you have all of your supplies and your car packed and ready to go!
Now what?

Lets talk about YOU for a moment....
Be on your best behavior. I know this should go without saying. Have your coffee, your zen moment and your pain reliever (if you need one in the morning). In all of the hustle before you start your day make sure you do a mental checklist of everything you need to do and get prepared for it. You will be in for a long and trying day.

- Be Helpful. I know when we first set up our "EZ up" (HA!) tent that Mr. RedMarionette and I we struggled. We had a nice gentleman come over and give us a hand. Bless him. If you see someone struggling and you know they havent locked in that one poppy-clicker-doo that will make the whole thing slide up together, please let them know nicely and give them a hand.

- Remain Hydrated. This I cannot stress enough. Are you getting a headache by 10 am and you have only been open since 9? Are you feeling tired and cranky already and you only just got your tent up? Sweating a lot and feeling like you are losing your concentration? Have you been drinking water and still havent needed to use the bathrooms for several hours? All of these symptoms are from dehydration. DRINK WATER. Not soda. You would be surprised at how much water you SHOULD be drinking during a day while out in the heat, not necessarily even sitting in the sun. Please remember this. Drink water. Water... Water... they say if you hear something three times you remember it better. Water.
Side Note: Sunscreen and Sunglasses. Make sure you have them.

- Smile. Yes, even if you are gritting your teeth when you do it. Keep smiling. Nobody likes to approach a frowning face even if your display is spectactular. You are the face of your company. Go with clean clothes, plenty of deodorant, and brushed teeth.

- Make eye contact and say "Hi!" or "Good Morning!" (my preference is Good Morning instead of just Morning). This is a big one. Make eye contact if someone is looking at your items. Greet them. Comment on the necklace/shirt/hat they are wearing (but be sincere), tell them about your product or a special you are running. "I am running a special today on 10 dangly-bobs for 15 dollars!" or the ever special..."Everything is handmade by me!"

- Misery Loves Company, but no one loves Misery. Do not mention how you arent selling anything, your sweat is running down your back to your panties or your display isnt pretty enough. Yes, that is a raincloud....we all see it.
Put a positive spin on things.
You arent selling much, but you are giving out business cards and had great pratice setting up your tent/display and met some awesome artists!
Everyone is sweaty...its hot....it happens.
Dont like your display afterall? Every display is different! Try harder! You arent set in stone for every craft show once you do it once! Change it up!
Oh look! That raincloud is in the shape of an ice cream cone... Mmm ice cream.
You would be surprised at how many people can hear your comments, see how unhappy or upset you are. I know this is a tall order when your day is going horribly, but rise above it if you can.

On to some more information for when you are selling....

- Important items need to be handy. A cash apron. Your purse. Your credit card swiper. Pens. Packaging for purchased items. I keep a tub under my chair that has a clipboard, pen and imprinter. I keep my cash ON me. I can easily use the tub as a catch all for completing a purchase. Most of the time it is in the back corner or sort of out of the way so people can continue to shop.

- Make sure your helper knows as much as the possibly can and more than they would ever want to about your product. If you are super busy this will be valuable. Stopping to interrupt while you are talking to another customer will inevitably happen, but knowledge on simple things will deter a lot of that. Is this sterling silver? Is this a REAL fur? Is this washable?

-Talkers. Some people just want to talk about everything ever related to your craft.
This is a connundrum as sometimes we want to hear what their 108 year old grandma knitted. But we have customers. Customers need to be as front and center as possible. Try to bring them into the conversation politely if you can, even if it is only eye contact. So that way you are recognizing the person is able to interject if they have a question and that it is an open conversation.
Me: "Oh she walked on the moon, eh?"
Talker: "Yes, and she did it with only one leg!"
New Customer comes up to browse, hears part of the conversation.
Me: "Good Morning, How are you?" to new Customer
Me To talker "Well that is amazing that she could walk on the moon with one leg!" Eye Contact with New Customer "Ive never heard of anything like that, have you?"

Yes, this is a silly example, but do your best to divide your attention all around. If you are a customer, please be aware of your surroundings, some people dont want to cut you off, but they do have a booth/table to run.
Any private conversations should be kept to a minimum while selling. Either exchange information to communicate further later or wait til after the show.

Another talker note: I visit shows as a customer as well as a seller.
If you are a seller and have a cell phone stuck to your ear. I will not interrupt you. I will not ask you questions. If you dont have prices and I cant ask you, I will not purchase from you. Be mindful of how that looks to your customers. I understand if it is an emergency, but if you are talking about how Cindy's brother just broke up with your best friends Sister...Im moving on.

- Product. When you sell something, rearrange a little. Fill the space with a spare item you have under your table with your extra product. Throughout the day fuss over your booth. Take a step back and look at it every hour to see where there are gaps or it needs straightening. Look at it from a customers perspective seeing it fresh.

- Future Purchases. Make sure you try to offer a business card to everyone who sets foot NEAR your booth. If they purchase something, include two or three cards so they can pass them along to family and friends. People may not be able to purchase something right now, but when they have money later, how will they contact you without your information?

Tip #4 - Have an Eyecatcher. Have a piece on your booth that will draw people in. Whether it is the layout, a huge display of shiny things, or your banner. Have something that makes people see you from across the sea of tables and tents and go... "Ooo!" My eyecatcher is my tent. I have heard people say that you should have lights, people are drawn to lit items. I havent tried this but I am considering getting battery powered xmas lights for my display this fall! Be Inventive!

That is it for today!
Tomorrow I will post - Craft Show Mojo - Part 4 - Uncomfortable situations you WILL experience.

Craft Show Mojo - Part 2

Yesterdays post was mostly about what you need to get ready as basics for a show. It targeted people who already had some knowledge about shows in general.

We can back up a little bit on this one and discuss HOW to find a show, what type of questions to ask and some other little thought provoking information.

Tip #3 - Treat every show as a gamble as well as an investment. Like the stock market. :)
You invest in your booth/space rent, your gas and time to get there. Will there be a guaranteed return... No. Even if people are telling you the show has been a hit for the last 10 years, they have different product, different pricing and every year will be a different crowd! Be prepared for losses and not even breaking even. Its the nature of the beast.

Lets start with HOW to find a show.

- I belong to a Team on Etsy.com and it is a Florida based team. They are an excellent resource for finding local shows. It is over 100 active members all across the state, so of course that's 100 people looking and sharing information. If you are not part of a local team I highly suggest it. Not only for the transfer of information, but the Florida team has organized and hosted two successful and funky shows this year so far! Not your everyday Arts and Crafts Festivals!
- Of course you can always do an Internet search with key words for certain information.
I use http://www.dogpile.com/ as it searches several major Internet browsers at once.
- There are also quarterly publications you can find to sign up for that list events in your state or local area. http://www.artandcraftshows.net/ is a great resource but is by subscription.
- http://www.eventlister.com/ is another resource that is reputable.
- http://www.craigslist.org/ for you area. Be careful with this one as I was involved in a scam. I found a show on craigslist locally for a very decent booth fee and was taken in. Needless to say the guy skipped out on it. I now only participate in reputable shows that have been going for multiple years, the coordinator is known to me, or shows where the coordinator has previous experience with shows that you can track.
- Call your local fairgrounds or community centers, see if they have anything on their calender.

Now that you know how to find the show, these are the questions I always ask:

- What is the estimated attendance based on previous years?
- One day show or two day show?
- Is it Juried? (Meaning do you have to submit photos to get in the show?)
- Is the sponsor/coordinator advertising, if so, where? (Follow up with this one too, make sure they are doing some sort of advertising!)
- How many vendors are participating?
- How much parking is there?
- Is there a load/unload area for your items?
- Is the ground area level for a tent and tables?
- Is electricity/ table/ chairs/ tents provided?
- Is there an inclement weather policy? (Do you get your money back if a hurricane comes through the day before and they cancel the show. Most times it is a "no" as the money is already spent on advertising, but still ask!)
- Are there facilities with running water?
- Are animals and pets allowed?

One of the questions I see the most about shows is: Is $100.00 too much for a show? (enter any dollar amount you want there)

Well, honestly you should ask yourself that question. Research the show, find out if there is a good turn out.
Do you have $100.00 you could risk losing if you dont sell anything?
Do you have enough product and high enough price points to handle that fee? (we will discuss this more next.)
If it is a NO to any of those questions you ask yourself... I'd highly suggest you not participate.

Price Points and Product.
I will elaborate on the questions above that you should be asking yourself.
Without going into a huge accounting and economy lesson the simplist way to explain price points when refering to your product is the scale of pricing you keep on a regular basis.
My price points are fairly low.
My items range from $6.00 to $35.00. I would have to sell a LOT of $6.00 items to make back $100.00 plus the actual cost, materials, time, etc that went into the original piece. Can your product markup support that?

On the other hand, if I had higher priced items in the $100 to 200 dollar range, I could handle a higher booth fee.
Also, Do I have enough product? To potentially make back that $100+ I would have to make sure I have enough product to sell to compensate. Going with 20 items probably wouldnt cut it.

Now one exception in my case; if that $100.00 fee is spread over a TWO day show, that makes a difference! It allows me more time to sell my less expensive items making it more reasonable for my price points.
As I said before, if you cannot afford to potentially lose $100.00 (or any dollar amount) I would suggest thinking twice about a show.
Personally, I go for shows that are anywhere from $25.00 to $60.00 per day. If you find a local community center has table spaces for $15.00 or so, try it out! It would be a low risk investment for you to get your feet wet!

Thats it for today!

Thanks for listening to my words of advice and opinions. Please know yourself, your product and your financial strength for your decisions. What I write is meant to be helpful and not the end all be all.
Good luck!

My Craft Show Mojo - Part 1

Good Morning all!
I have seen so many people asking questions about booths and tables for shows that I started a thread in the forums yesterday to get a compilation of tips from sellers for those looking for help, advice or to refresh their views on shows.
http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5776655
As you can see there is a LOT of information on there.

I decided I would like to help by adding my own post of tips, tricks and how I do things with my routine.
I would like to start by saying first that I have always had help. From my best friend to Mr. RedMarionette... someone has always been there to help man the booth or table, help set up and tear down and be a second set of hawk eyes for sticky fingers. I think it is vital and I highly suggest having a what I call a Wingman.

Tip #1 - Set up BEFORE your show. At least two weeks in advance so you can see how it will really work. Do you need more display area? Time yourself. See if you really do need a second or third set of hands to help with setup and a tent? Make sure your product will fit and not look too crowded or too sparse. Can you easily nagivate in the space you have allotted? Do you need to rethink your setup?

I will start with the basic checklist that I take to a show. This is for my displays and my product, it will vary for everyone of course, but at least it gives you an idea of how much goes in to it.

- Tents and Weights. Not always applicable, but definitely nice to keep out of the sun. Get good weights! We have concrete blocks to sit on the "feet" of the tent. I have seen a lot of information on how to make hanging weights from the rafters down the leg of a tent.

- Tables and Table Cloth. I recommend floor length so you can use the underneath of the table to hide the boxes you used to move product, store extra product, hide your cooler and your purse!

- Chairs one for each person at least! We have to collapsable camping chairs. I prefer seeing Director chairs I think they look better as you are closer to eyelevel with customers.

- A Cooler with plenty of water and snacks. Also include Advil or another pain reliever as you never know when you or your neighbor will need it.

- Misc Box. A plastic box or a tote bag of the misc items you might or might not need. Scissors, tape, thread and needle, ribbon, twine, wet naps or some cleaner cloth, hand sanitizer, extra pens, stickers for pricing, sunglasses and sunscreen, safety pins, paper towels/kleenex, and bug spray (a MUST).

- Your display. Your display will be the props, shelves, lights, bowls, risers, walls, business card holders, etc. Anything that you will use to display your product. I have little while shelves that I found at a garage sale (Garage Sales are perfect for finding those little props and doodads that you use on your table) I also have a hand cart to help move everything.

- Product. This is the photo of my first Red Marionette craft show. We were allowed one table space worth. I had PLENTY of stuff. Since then I have organized it more into groups of items. Take more than you ever think you will need. It can be stored under the table for when you sell items and need to restock.

- Branding/Logo. Your name recognition is VITAL in having repeat sales and people recognizing you. Have a ton of your business cards ready. Have a logo somewhere. I did not have a banner for my first couple of shows so I purchased wood letters and a little train letter set spelling out Red Marionette.

This worked well because it was eye catching and did brand myself. I do not have a guestbook or mailing list book, but I do know some people rely on that for advertising.

- Money. Or a means to accept it. I do not accept checks, only cash and Credit cards. Bring plenty of change. Price your items so it is easy to make change to patrons. For medium shows I have at least 150 dollars in small bills for change and at least a roll of quarters.
I use Propay.com to accept credit cards. I purchased an inexpensive imprinter through ebay (Mr.Imprinter) that came with slips. Very easy! I recommend keeping your money in a vendor apron or your pockets. For the credit cards I have a clipboard that I keep with the imprinter. If there isnt table space to imprint the card I can put it in my lap and do it that way. There will always be a hard surface to write on. Tie a pen to the clipboard with a ribbon so you never have to search for one.

- Consumables. Tissue Paper, Bags, boxes, freebies, advertising. When someone purchases something, are you going to have all of that handy in a tub to package it up safely? Make a tub or box specificially for packaging. It will save time.

Tip #2 - LABEL!!!! Not only do I individually price items, I also have signage that says what the items are. Not always is it clear what a boo-boo bag is, or a finger puppet may not look like it til you put it on your hand. Make it easy. Some people dont want to ask questions.

Thats it for now! I will go in to more tips and tricks later. But for now I hope this helps get you pointed in the right direction for all that you will need to get started and prepare for your show!

Experiments...Are FUN!

I have been doing an experiment for a week now.
I have been on a mission to draw more traffic to my shop through outside etsy advertising (ads placed in sites and blogs that have nothing to do with etsy as well as some that do)
I have seen people mention how listing on a regular basis has helped draw traffic to their shop. I had passed over that tip until recently.
I found a good method to keep me on top of listing at least once a day.
To me the time of day doesnt matter as there is only so much time that I have in a day to fiddle with it. (I love the word fiddle)

So here is what I do.
I set aside what I want to list for the week.
I take all of my photos over the weekend. I suggest 10 am on a sunny morning - that gives me the best light in my sunroom.
I edit the photos and then send them to myself in individual emails for that day I want to list it. "Listing for Monday"... "Listing for Tuesday" And of course include measurements and details about the item in the email so I dont have to remember it or keep the item with me if I want to list it during my lunch break for example.
Then each day I do my listing when I get a chance and off I go on my merry way.
I have only done this for one week. Started Saturday the 16th through the 22nd. (I skipped Saturday and Sunday this week and listed again today)
Last week alone I sold five items.
FIVE.
Something must be working.
It might be the ads, it might be the listing. It might have just been a good week!
We will see how this week goes and I will report back to you all again so you can hear the results! How exciting!

P.S.
I finished all of my cutting out this weekend aside from the Gingerbread Men. I cleaned up the felt that was all over the kitchen table! I can now begin sewing! It took me a full week like I had predicted.
I think I will cut out the 15 gingerbread men details tonight to get it over with. They are the hardest because of the "icing" on their arms and legs.

I did cut out some cute little pocket animals too. Bunnies and frogs.
I also cut out a new design of a Fox for ornaments per earlier suggestions in my blog! See, I do listen!

Supplies Restriction Update!!

I know I havent mentioned a lot about my supplies restriction this month.
I didnt want to bring it up then I would be thinking about supplies.....
Mmmm supplies.

Everything is going fine. I find that the longer I go without the happier I am not spending my money. It makes me THINK about what I want and make a list.

Luckily I started with a huge stash so I am able to have a ton of things to work on without having a problem of running out of something. But some supplies are getting low!

I have given myself permission to order from two places that I need supplies from as they wouldnt arrive anyway til after the restriction is up.
(AND I have a show on the 20th of September so I need to get crackin on some of these things)

Then, this weekend I will make a trip to Michaels to stock up on some thread and felt that needs attending to since I used up all of it... YAY for me!
My pocketbook is thanking me, truly.
It has been a learning lesson about spending money occasionally through the month and not NEEDING the supplies or intend to use them later.
Dont get me wrong, I still have a ton of stuff, but it is helping train myself to make the right decisions.
I suggest anyone who has even a slight (read that BIG) problem like I do with supplies, restrict themselves for a month to see what happens. Have a partner who provides intervention. :) It helps.
Good Luck to all who try this. It really has helped me in many ways.

First Step: is admitting you have a problem.
Second Step: is refraining.
Third Step: is wait til your restriction is up and buy everything on your list. heheee!

New Graphics!

I worked late last night on a new cleaner Banner for my Blog and Store front!
What do you think?

I also learned how to make an animated .gif image.... SO neato! (I posted it at the bottom of the page but it doesnt seem to be working....hm. Investigation shall proceed...)

I will be using this for advertising. When I run out of business cards I shall also be updating the look to the new cleaner look of Red Marionette.
I am excited.
It kinda feels like I cleaned house.

This is the old banner and the new one is at the top of the page!

What do you think?

I wonder why it isnt animated.... weird.

Gift Card Holders are becoming extinct!

Just like the dinosaurs they have had their chance.
No, its not a meteor coming crashing into my craft studio targeted specifically at the tub of gift card holders where they all shall perish from horrible flaming deaths.....

Yeah, way to go Kelli, start off a blog post like that. Jeez....

The gift card holders are EVOLVING!
I know I have been posting Pocket Monsters for the sneak peeks and some actually listed on Etsy right now.
They shall be evolving into Pocket Animals. No not marsupials. But Stuffed Animals with pockets so they are a double whammy....

A gift card holder has limited use and once the card/littles/money is removed its kind of just a thing.
With a Pocket Animal you still have the stuffed animal to cuddle, love and smother with your co-dependent affection if you so choose.

Wow, I am having a weird morning.

So in turn the "stuffies" I have also shall become evolved... so its like the gift card holder and stuffie mated and had a child...
Yeah. Thats better.... a happier ending for all. Cross species breeding.

Check back soon for the love product sneak peek of a Gift Card Holder and Stuffie.
Im going to have more coffee....

Bad Weather and Sheep!

Here is the prototype I whipped up tonight.
He looks like a cotton ball with a face!
Aw.

I didnt get as much accomplished.... AGAIN... as I wanted. Work was shut down due to inclement weather predicted tomorrow. I am crossing my fingers for Wednesday off too! hehe!

Fay (Tropical Storm and potentially hurricane) has everyone here very aware and it is bringing up old memories from 2005/6 hurricanes.

I was without power three times in 2005. Not fun.

I think tomorrow I will try to make as productive as possible cause I know you all will hold me accountable! :)

Good Luck to all of you in the path of this storm.

Making Lemons into Lemon-Freaking-Meringue PIE!

I didnt have a very productive weekend.
There, I said it.

Well....... let me rephrase.
It was fairly productive just not in the Red Marionette alley.

I spent Friday Night and the better part of Saturday making Diamonds.
-Bling!-
This is our Man-Room. The second bedroom/office where Mr. RedMarionette spends a lot of time on the computer.
We wanted to make it nice so he chose the color and I helped work some magic.

Mr. RedMarionette painted the solid wall and I helped edge, and he helped with the diamonds. It looks really really dark in here but it is actually the light grey that you see in the photos above in the diamonds. He wanted it darker, I think it is plenty dark.
In my next lifetime I shall have enough time to complete some really nice drapes in a heavy satiny nubby charcoal fabric.

We also refer to this room as the Man-Cave. Rather fitting now.
(I must add though I loathe the brown doors...eh)

I admit though, I did work some on products this weekend. My main goal was getting things photographed for listing at least one item a day for the entire week as an experiment.
Sunday I listed two and this morning already ive listed two.
We will see if it affects views or sales.

So I took all kinds of photos and edited them. I finished hand sewing about 15 ornaments and 5 gift card holders yesterday evening. (The Moose with Scarves are finished, I just need to get them photographed)
Im rather tired today.... :) COFFEE! Thank goodness.

So the lack of progress on my todo list will push me to work even harder this week!
The impending arrival of the September 20th and 21st show seems to be closing in faster than I am ready for.

Tonight we begin my least favorite task.
Cutting.
Cutting out all of the itty bitty pieces and bodies and ears and wings and things.
I love the hand stitching... hate the cutting.

My fingers even hate the cutting. They rebel with huge blisters even though I have nice squishy scissors and a rolly cutter-doo (Thats what it is called at my house....Olfa Cutter is not a household word. Rolly Cutter-Doo is.)
Still, a lot of it needs to be hand cut.

My goal for the next few evenings is to get a HUGE mountain of items cut out so I dont have to cut things out for a while. Realistically it may take me every evening this week.
I shall photograph the mountain of progress... that should be fun.
At least it will hold me accountable for getting things done when I know I have to report to you all! :)

Here is the list of things I shall be cutting:

Ornaments -
Owls, Bears, Moose with Scarves, Cat with Angel Wings, Bear with Angel Wings, Sheep, Penguin, Cat, Heart with Angel Wings, Gingerbread Men, and Cows.

Monsters
Tree Stars
Scarves
Pocket Peeper Stockings
Appliques for Clutch Purses

Sooo... that should be plenty to bite off, eh?
Ill keep you all updated!

Prototype Applique Tote Bags

A bubblegum pink tote was my first victim. I bought these premade so I could have a lower price on these than the entirely handmade ones in my shop.
The letters are appliques. I used HeatBond which is an iron on applique material that prevents fraying and can even be machine washed on gentle.

I wanted a black tote with white lettering like the old fashioned cartoon burglar colors. But I had pink already on hand.
I know a lot of the old loot bags were rounded as well.... but I thought it came out cute.
What do you think?

It is the perfect size for groceries, trips to the beach or carrying around as a purse.

I got adventurous with the fabric pattern on this one. Yes they are iron on appliques.
SWAG

I love saying Swag Bag. Dont know why but it sounds neat.

So here is the same premade tote that I purchased and you can see the letters stand out quite a bit!

I am thinking anywhere between 9 to 10 dollars for these totes.

There is a pattern I got from Martha Stewarts website that is an insert of pockets (that is removable) for tote bags like this. So you can make them more utilitarian or convenient like a purse with pockets. I will whip one up this weekend more than likely to see how it looks with these totes.

Wow... I had no idea!

Apparently I have been featured and up on peoples blogs and some of these I didnt even know it!
How neat is that??

Someone mentioned googling myself today to see if anything came up... well here it is!

More ideas!

Oh calm down, I know I just posted about finishing current ideas that I have with supplies already in my closet.
But these ideas can be finished (mostly, I promise) with things I currently have.

I found this how to tutorial on Flickr yesterday on how to make scrap ornament balls.
I have a ton of scraps from other projects I have been working on so I am totally into reusing them like this! Now I would need to get some styrofoam balls, but everything else I have! So the balls I will more than likely get on September 1st! :)
Also -
I have some premade tote bags that I have been needing to embellish. For a lower price point than the completely handmade lined ones that I have. And I finally decided on some designs. So I will get to work tonight on some prototypes... (discussed in previous post) and see what I can come up with! :)
There is also this idea I saw online from an article Mr. RedMarionettes mom sent me about how to make insertable pockets for the tote.
NEAT! I will see what magic I can work.

14 Days in....

So I am 14 days in to my supply purchasing restriction.
I feel I am doing very well....
This is making me utilize the supplies I have for projects that need to be finished.
I think I have discovered my downfall. I have so many ideas that I purchase all I need to for each idea that comes into my head and then I never get around to it. Not a good strategy.

There have been a few times over the last 14 days that I have said "Oh! I will need such-and-such!" But I know I cannot until September 1st so I am making a list!

Tan Thread
Christmas Green Thread
Polyfil

Yep, those are the only THREE necessities that I have come up with that I will need by the end of the month. I have talked myself out of a lot of things that are not necessary! I really am proud of myself for that.

I also think in the long run that this will help me better organize my space as I will know exactly what I have on hand instead of going "I'm not sure I have that, so Ill get another package of it in case." Which has been known to happen a lot with me.
If all goes well and I give myself one trip to Joanns at the beginning of September, I may see if I can make it through September then as well with a supply restriction. Ambitious, I know. :)

I also am learning it is a grand thing to make prototypes!
Making one or two of something to see how the design is, to see how it looks and comes out I think is crucial. I am just now learning this. In the past I would have cut out 50 of something and then made one and not be happy with it at all. Then I have 50 of this thing cut out of material and stuff that I would have to make into something else. Wasteful, unfortunately. So now I know when I have a new design that I make one or two and then revise as necessary!
Yes! I can learn!

Before the end of this weekend I have an idea for a star on the top of a Christmas Tree. Out of felt, of course. I will see if I can get a prototype of that done so I can share photos with you all too.

I am working on a large batch of Ornaments this week. Christmas color combination Red and Green, Red and White, Dark green and Light Green, and Light Blue and White. I will post photos of the ornament factory as soon as I can get some taken in good lighting.
I think the moose ornaments I am making will need a little plaid scarf too... we will see how that turns out!
Have a great week everyone!

Monster Prototypes

I apologize in advance for the iffy photos. Its nighttime and I wanted to post these so I could get them up on my blog.

These are my new pocket monsters. I dont have a catchy name yet for these little guys. But they can hold wishes, teeth, secret notes, money and various other things for little boys or girls.

They are about 4" wide and all have varying height.

They are very sturdy with 2 layers of felt for the pocket and the body is 2 layers. They are slightly plushy with polyfil and completely hand stitched.... so they took a little longer to make. I think some of it will be hand and some of it will be machine stitch in the future.

Its hard to see in this one but the mouth of these is the pocket to hide things.

Id love to hear what you think!

Getting to know... ME?!

http://etsyfest.blogspot.com/2008/08/meet-red-marionette.html

Well golly gee....
Ive been interviewed and featured!

How neat! :)

Thanks to WylesStyle for putting all of that together!

Coupons, Websites, Aggressive Schedules, and Supply Restriction Update

Last night I made coupons to go with some of my contributions to The Little Black Box. I am super excited with how they came out even though they are on regular paper. I did print some of them on scrapbook paper so the back side of them have a nice pattern.

I will put the code in for the coupon so people can redeem it online in my store.

Hopefully the people that purchase the LBB will use these coupons in my store! I want to encourage purchases that are not just the items I am sending to LBB.
For those of you that know I do sneak peeks on a regular basis, Ill go ahead and tell you what I am sending in to LBB. It will be a mix of items spread over three months, but I am including....
Finger Puppets, Brooches, Mirrors, Pendants, Magnets, Buttons and appliques! Varied selection!
AND... for those of you that are very observant I HAVE grabbed www.redmarionette.com
(Yes you can see it doesnt say www.redmarionette.etsy.com on the top of the card!)
I linked redmarionette.com back to my etsy storefront so they are one and the same, currently!
I actually had to make myself a to do list last night and taped it to the bedroom door so I can keep track of the tasks I set myself to do. I have exactly 6 weeks and 4 days before my first Fall Craft show.... so I definitely have to get on the ball!
The 8.5 x 11 piece of paper is filled. FILLED with lines to check off. Yes, I like being busy and pushing myself. :)
I am doing well on the supply restriction I have put myself on. I actually am excited to make use of things I already have. I will feel like I am getting my money out of my investment. :) I think my pocket book will thank me.
Mr. RedMarionettes Mom said she has a stash of things she would like to send me to use, so perhaps I will get some supplies this month afterall, without me purchasing them. I cant help it if she sends it to my door and I HAVE to open the package! :) It would only be polite!
Hehe.
Have a great Wednesday everyone!

Third Times the Charm

I have created the third version of the prototype stocking and I am much happier with this one.

As you can see this stocking has the pocket peeper and fabric cuff combined!

I think it looks much nicer and...fuller... if you will, than the other stockings which were just missing something.

They will all have little variations but I am happy with how they came out!

I would love any feedback on colors, trims, anything in particular you all think might be a great addition to the piece!

The ornament in the pocket has a red ribbon attached, for the photos I tucked it down behind him into the pocket.

I have some modern fabrics in Christmas Patterns and I have vintage fabrics as well.
Mostly keeping to the rick rack and pom pom trims, though.

I love these shots when they are peering out at you.

I do have gingerbread men, bears, octopus, walrus, Owls and Baby owls made for ornaments.

I promise I will get around to making more animal styles! :)

Thanks for looking!

Ive been banned!

I have been banned!
Self imposed, mind you.
I have banned myself from purchasing any supplies until September 1st.

I have been on a run recently with Etsy, Ebay and Michaels (Our closest store is closing so they have had a lot of items 50% off.....cant help myself!) purchasing supplies without using up what I have or even STARTING projects I have lined up I just have to have supplies for.

Well no more!
Nada. ZIP! None... yes it is a scary and final word!

I always brainstorm new ideas and then want to get the stuff to make it. I hardly ever get to half of the ideas I produce, so the supplies sit. Good thing a lot of my stuff is cross pollinated (meaning I use felt, fabric, etc for many different things) so that will help.
I think I can make it to September 1st and then assess the situation. If I make it through August without a breakdown then I may try again for September!
I know, collective gasps all around. But you must not understand the sheer amount of supplies I actually have!
There is a nice photo of the inside of the closet. You cant get all of it, but the tubs on the right hand side are all fabric. The bright colors right in front are felt. I have packing supplies and other paper goods and supplies all to the left hand side.
So, wish me luck with this aggresive endeavor.
I think my pocketbook will thank me.

My Little Black Box Experience

I surf the forums on Etsy.com on a fairly regular basis and AlwaysAmy (www.alwaysamy.etsy.com) had started a thread about Little Black Boxes. I was intrigued so I read through the posts and discovered a FUN little way of getting samples and doodads from various sellers who use LBB as a promotional tool.
http://thelittleblackboxes.com/index.html
As you read about it you will see that each box has a good mix of products in it. The people who contribute each month give a certain amount of items and LBB mixes them up so not all boxes are stuffed with exactly the same items! (How exciting! I love surprises)

When my box arrived last night I tore into it without a moments hesitation. I had to pace myself as I was overwhelmed with the amount of goodies inside. I had to sit down and go through it piece by piece.
- Inside I had a wonderful BRIGHT set of earrings from AlwaysAmy. Love her stuff!
- A soap bar (Yes an entire BAR) of Neopolitian soap from Soap Seduction.
- A bookmark from A Muted Pallate... seriously cute stuff!
- Two soap samples from Soap Sushi! SO interesting cause it looks like little sushi's.
- Soap Scent-sations gets the award for more creative way to promote her items. She uses a little plastic tray that is divided into six squares and fills each one with a different soap. On the front she has an accordian piece of paper that tells you which one is which! I dont want to use any cause its perfectly presented! (But I will)
- I had many coupons, tags, 4x6 art print, and business cards in there, it was a smorgasboard!
- I received two fragrance oils...Nocturne Alchemy and Velvet Moon Bathery. Both delicious smelling, spices and rich. Amazing stuff! I will be keeping their information!
- A woofie Waffle from Unique Dog Treats... adorable! My best friend has a Boston Terrier and Lucy will surely enjoy!
- There were two more pairs of earrings, both in such different styles. They both had green stones in them One was Hippy Dippy Designs and forgive me but off the top of my head I cant remember the other one! I will have to update this and give them credit!
- A wonderful sample packet in an organza bag from Aromalite - It included a wax tart, a sample body spray and a luscious sample of body lotion. I wanted to lick it it smelled so good. I had to wrestle it away from Mr. RedMarionette. He couldnt keep his hands off of it.
-Midnight creations had a travel tissue holder in high heel fabric. ADORABLE and so useful!

I am highly impressed and pleased with the purchase! A great variety! I recommend this to anyone who loves trying new things and loves surprises! Also, a great way to get a good portion of fun little stocking stuffers! Just an idea! :)

Perhaps in the future you might see some items from Red Marionette in those amazing little boxes! :)
Have a great weekend everyone!
